AI and Ethics – Prof. Kevin Burden, University of Hull

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT are increasingly being used in the field of education but whilst the advances of AI are seen to provide various opportunities for teaching and learning, new concerns have also arisen relating, amongst others, to bias, ethics, fairness, data ownership and privacy. This has led to the publication of various AI ethics guidelines and policy documents, however, the development of AI ethics policies pertaining to children and K-12 education has lagged behind.
This session, led by academics in the School of Education, will present the findings from an exhaustive and rigorous systematic literature review focused on the ethical challenges facing schools using AI and the responses that have enabled them to reap the benefits.
The session provided examples of how teachers and schools are currently using AI, before outlining the findings from 25 peer-reviewed studies published between 2010 and 2023, that highlight both the ethical challenges and responses from schools in the face of these emerging technologies. Attendees were encouraged to actively participate in the session, contributing their own experiences and reactions to the phenomenon that is AI.
